Quick answer: By the latest official NIRF ranking (NIRF 2025), the top five law colleges in India are NLSIU Bengaluru, NLU Delhi, NALSAR Hyderabad, WBNUJS Kolkata, and GNLU Gandhinagar. All admit through CLAT except NLU Delhi, which admits only through AILET. A ranking, though, is a filter, not a shortlist. Check which exam each college takes, and whether your child is even eligible, before you build a plan around any list.
A ranking tells you which institutions scored well. It does not tell you which ones your child can actually apply to, and on the NIRF law list those are two very different questions.
Five of the top ten NIRF ranked law colleges in India do not admit through CLAT. One of them does not admit school-leavers at all. Families who print the list and start preparing for a single exam find this out late, usually after the application window has closed.
This guide gives you the top 25 entries from the latest NIRF law ranking, and then the part the ranking leaves out: which exam each college takes, what it costs, and how to read a ranking without being misled by it.

Which NIRF Edition Is Current?
This guide uses NIRF 2025, released on 4 September 2025. At the time of this review, it is the latest edition published on the official NIRF site (nirfindia.org). NIRF 2026 has not yet been officially released by the Ministry of Education; based on the usual cycle it is expected around September or October 2026. Ignore unofficial “NIRF 2026” lists circulating on other websites, since several relabel 2025 data or carry figures that do not match the official table.
When comparing NIRF law colleges, always check the edition attached to the figures. The official NIRF law table is the source for the ranks and scores below, and we will update this page the day a newer edition goes live.

The Rank 6 Problem Every Parent Should Know About
IIT Kharagpur sits at rank 6, yet it does not offer a five-year integrated law degree.
Its Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law runs a three-year LL.B. specialising in intellectual property law, and eligibility is restricted to holders of a first-class Bachelor’s degree in engineering, technology, or medicine, a first-class Master’s in science or pharmacy, or an MBA with one of those backgrounds.
A Class 12 student simply cannot apply. If you are building a shortlist of the best law colleges in India for 5 year LLB, rank 6 is not on it.
This is the clearest example of why a ranking should never be used as a shortlist. NIRF ranks the law programmes an institution runs. It does not tell you which of those programmes a seventeen-year-old is eligible for.
Best Law Colleges in India for BA LLB: The Detail
Here are eight selected institutions for school-leavers, keeping their NIRF rank numbers. A shortlist of the best law universities in India should compare courses and costs, not just the institution name. Fees are as published by each institution; where an institution does not publish a figure, this says so rather than guessing.
- NLSIU Bengaluru. CLAT. India’s first National Law University and the institution that created the five-year integrated law degree in India. Its BA LLB lets students declare a major in history, economics, politics, or sociology alongside law. Published fee for 2026-27: about Rs 4,51,000 per year, including housing, plus a one-time admission fee.
- NLU Delhi. AILET only. It is the single university in India that admits on AILET, and it does not participate in CLAT. 120 BA LLB seats, with a 30 percent horizontal reservation for women across all categories. Published fee: roughly Rs 2,33,000 per year for day scholars, or Rs 3,75,000 with hostel and mess.
- NALSAR Hyderabad. CLAT. Goes beyond Bar Council requirements by making Law and Poverty and Law of Intellectual Property compulsory, and runs electives in law and technology, cyber law, and climate change. Intake 132. Published first-year cost for 2026-27: about Rs 3,17,000, including mess advance and refundable deposits.
- NUJS Kolkata. CLAT, solely. 132 BA LLB seats, including 20 NRI and NRI-sponsored seats. Its published admission-time collection for the 2025 cycle was Rs 1,25,700; the full annual cost including hostel is not published in a machine-readable form, so confirm directly.
- GNLU Gandhinagar. CLAT. Undergraduate intake 193, with a second campus at Silvassa that appears as a separate choice in CLAT counselling. GNLU’s most recent published fee document states Rs 2,41,000 per year, but the document itself is dated to an earlier academic year, so confirm before budgeting.
- Symbiosis Law School Pune. SLAT, plus a personal interaction that carries 30 percent of the selection weight. The highest-ranked private law school in the latest NIRF list, and the highest-ranked institution admitting on its own test. Published academic fee for 2025-26 works out to roughly Rs 5.06 to 5.26 lakh in year one; the published instalment figures do not reconcile exactly, so confirm with the current admission circular.
- NLU Odisha, Cuttack. CLAT. 120 general seats, with 25 percent reserved horizontally for Odisha domicile applicants. Published fee Rs 2,71,520 per year, excluding mess, which is billed separately.
- RMLNLU Lucknow. CLAT. One of the older NLUs and a consistent presence in the top 25. Fee not published in an accessible form; request it directly.
National Law Universities in India: Which Exam Opens Which Door?
There is genuine confusion in circulation on this, with published counts of National Law Universities in India ranging from 22 to 28.
The defensible position, taken from the Consortium’s own wording: 26 NLUs participate in CLAT, and NLU Delhi sits outside the Consortium and admits on AILET. For this application plan, those are 26 CLAT institutions plus NLU Delhi. This is not a complete national count, because some other National Law Universities use different admission routes.
The CLAT participating list shows 27 entries rather than 26 because GNLU’s Silvassa campus is listed separately from GNLU Gandhinagar. It is a campus, not a twenty-eighth university. Count universities and campuses separately, and do not equate Consortium membership with the national total.
The top NLUs in India by the latest NIRF rank are NLSIU Bengaluru, NLU Delhi, NALSAR Hyderabad, NUJS Kolkata, GNLU Gandhinagar, NLU Odisha, CNLU Patna, and RMLNLU Lucknow.
Law Admission in India: CLAT and AILET, Current Cycle
Both of these are announced, not expected. Check the dates against the date you are reading this.
CLAT 2027, conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities:
- Exam: Sunday 6 December 2026, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
- Applications opened 3 August 2026 and close 31 October 2026.
- 120 multiple-choice questions, 120 marks, 2 hours, with 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer.
- Five sections: English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques.
- Legal Reasoning assumes no prior legal knowledge; Quantitative Techniques is pegged to Class 10 mathematics.
- Eligibility: 10+2 with a minimum 45 percent aggregate, 40 percent for SC, ST, and PwD. No upper age limit.
AILET 2027, conducted by NLU Delhi:
- Exam: Sunday 13 December 2026, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
- Applications opened 7 August 2026.
- 150 questions, 150 marks, 120 minutes: English 50, Current Affairs and General Knowledge 30, Logical Reasoning 70.
- Negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer.
The two exams sit one week apart, which means your child can realistically prepare for both off one body of work. Most students targeting the best law colleges through CLAT should be sitting AILET as well.
How to Compare the Top Law Universities in India
To choose among the best colleges for law in India, use these five checks. Lists of the top LLB colleges in India often mix three-year and five-year programmes, so eligibility must come first.
- A ranking is not a shortlist. It ranks institutions on a composite score built from teaching, research, graduation outcomes, outreach, and perception. None of those five is “is my child eligible.”
- Check the exam before the rank. On this list, CLAT reaches ranks 1, 3, 4, 5, 15, 17, and 21. It does not reach ranks 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, or 13. Building a plan around one exam and a printed top-ten is how families end up with three applications instead of ten.
- Score gaps are not all equal. Ranks 1 to 5 sit between 82.97 and 76.23, a narrow band. Ranks 8 to 14 sit between 66.39 and 65.04, which is a seven-way tie in all but name. Treating rank 11 as meaningfully better than rank 14 is reading noise.
- One ranking is one opinion. NIRF is the government’s methodology. It is not the only one, and other published rankings order these institutions differently. Use it as a filter, not a verdict.
- Ask what the institution is for. NALSAR’s compulsory Law and Poverty course, NLSIU’s declared majors, NLU Delhi’s 30 percent horizontal reservation for women, NLUO’s Odisha domicile quota. These change the experience far more than three ranking places do.
Is Law the Right Direction in the First Place?
Everything above assumes the answer to a question nobody asked: should your child be doing law at all?
The five-year integrated LLB is a long commitment made at seventeen, usually on the strength of a relative’s suggestion or a courtroom drama. It suits a specific profile: strong verbal reasoning, comfort with dense reading, and an appetite for argument that survives being wrong.
At Lodestar that profile is measured rather than guessed, from three inputs read together. Vocational personality on the Holland Code, meaning the tasks and roles your child is suited to rather than whether they are shy or outgoing. Interest, collected through an open questionnaire on hobbies, activities, and aspirations. Aptitude across five areas, numerical, verbal, spatial, reasoning, and mechanical, with academic ability sitting inside that picture rather than apart from it.
The order is Holland Code first, then interest, then aptitude. An enterprising type with strong verbal aptitude and an interest in public affairs points toward law or policy. The same enterprising type with strong numerical aptitude points toward finance or management. Same personality result, different degree, different entrance exam, different five years.
Finalizing Decision is the Lodestar Guru programme for Classes 11 and 12: three sessions of one hour each with a dedicated counsellor, parent and child together, with the assessments taken beforehand. The system holds around 300 career options, narrowed to 40 to 50 by the assessment, to a wishlist of 20 to 25 in session one, to 6 in session two after occupation reports are read and the family works through colleges, entrance exams, and years of study, and finally to the top 2, a Plan A and a Plan B. Session three sets out the degree, the colleges, the entrance exams, and the coaching for both. You finish with a report of roughly 30 pages, and around 70 percent of students go on to follow the path identified.
Foundation Building serves Class 9 and Core Decision serves Class 10. If you miss taking this programme in Class 10, it can still be done in Class 11 or Class12 through Finalizing Decision.
Build the Shortlist, Then the Study Plan
Take the table above, cross out every college whose exam your child is not sitting, and look at what is left. If the list is short, the problem is the exam plan, not the ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which are the best law colleges in India?
By the latest NIRF ranking (NIRF 2025), the top five are NLSIU Bengaluru, NLU Delhi, NALSAR Hyderabad, NUJS Kolkata, and GNLU Gandhinagar. All admit through CLAT except NLU Delhi, which admits only through AILET.
Which is the best NLU in India?
NLSIU Bengaluru has held the top position in the NIRF law ranking consistently, with a score of 82.97 in NIRF 2025. NLU Delhi and NALSAR Hyderabad follow at 80.00 and 79.50.
How many National Law Universities are there in India?
Do not use the CLAT membership count as the national total. The Consortium describes CLAT as serving 26 NLUs. NLU Delhi admits through AILET, and other NLUs can use separate routes. GNLU Silvassa also appears separately in the participating-campus list.
Which are the law colleges accepting CLAT?
All 26 Consortium NLUs, plus a number of private and affiliate institutions that accept CLAT scores. On the NIRF 2025 top 25, CLAT reaches NLSIU, NALSAR, NUJS, GNLU, NLU Odisha, CNLU Patna, and RMLNLU Lucknow. KIIT and Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan also accept CLAT alongside their own tests.
What are the best law colleges in India for LLB after graduation?
The three-year LLB is a different market from the five-year integrated degree. IIT Kharagpur’s Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, at NIRF rank 6, admits only engineering, technology, medicine, science, pharmacy, and MBA graduates to its three-year IP-specialised LLB. Check three-year LLB availability institution by institution.
What is the CLAT 2027 exam date and application deadline?
CLAT 2027 is on Sunday 6 December 2026, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Applications opened on 3 August 2026 and closed on 31 October 2026. AILET 2027 follows on Sunday 13 December 2026.
Are NIRF rankings the right way to choose a law college?
They are a useful filter and a poor shortlist. NIRF scores institutions on teaching, research, graduation outcomes, outreach, and perception. It does not account for which exam a college takes, whether your child is eligible, where the college is, or what it costs.
