Engineering is one of the most important career choices available for a student today. Developments in technology and a push from the government to focus on \u201cMake in India\u201d are leading to an increase in the number of engineering roles in the country. Also, India is expected to meet the majority of the world\u2019s demand for skilled software engineers in the next decade. Overall, these are careers with a bright outlook for both traditional engineering areas like mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, software engineering and new and upcoming areas like mechatronics, instrumentation, AI and IOT. How is the engineering education in India:\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Engineering education in India has always been led by the government run Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and National Institutes of Technology (NIT). What used to be Regional Engineering Colleges (REC) earlier, has now been rebranded as NITs. There are 23 IITs and 31 NITs as of today and this number is expected to grow in the coming years. Every engineering aspirant has a dream of cracking the extremely tough entrance exams and making it to one of these coveted IITs and NITs. Apart from this, there are various state universities, Central Universities, private engineering colleges, deemed universities and Institutes of technologies offering a B E or B Tech degree.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the acceptance rate in IITs & NITs:<\/span><\/h2>\n

As every student and parent knows, getting into one of these prestigious colleges takes not only very high levels of intelligence, it takes being able to put in extreme amounts of hard work and even then you are not assured of a seat. The seat ratio (number of applicants to number of candidates being admitted) is around 1-1.5% for these colleges. Which means out of the 15 lac aspiring candidates, only about 15000 make it to the IITs and another 23000 make it to the NITs. This leaves a question mark on all the other 14.5 lac candidates and where they should be aiming for when it comes to engineering seats. The answer lies in the NIRF ranking which is issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development every year.<\/span><\/p>\n

How are the engineering colleges ranked?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Engineering colleges in the country are ranked by the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. This list is released once a year and ranks universities and colleges across various courses like engineering, medical, law, pharma. All categories of colleges are included – Central Government funded, state universities, deemed and private universities. The NIRF ranking considers various factors like quality of faculty, availability of labs and student placement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the state universities?<\/span><\/h2>\n

State Universities are universities established and run by the state governments, usually established by a local legislative assembly act. These universities are authorised by the UGC to grant degrees. For engineering, the famous state universities include Delhi Technological University, Anna University (Tamil Nadu), Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU in Anantapur, Kakinada & Hyderabad) and Cochin University of Science & Technology (CUSAT). The majority of seats in these universities are reserved for students of those particular states. There are very few seats available for out of state students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What other options for engineering are available?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Other options for engineering include private, deemed universities and a few of the Central Universities that offer engineering degrees. Some Central Universities like University of Hyderabad are ranked very high for their engineering programs. But most central universities focus on non engineering course options.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the best colleges after IITs and NITs?<\/span><\/h2>\n

After the IITs and NITs, many state universities feature in the top engineering colleges list in the NIRF ranking. These may be good choices for students in those states. Beyond those, the various private colleges feature in the list. BITS Pilani, VIT, Manipal Institute of Technology, SRM IST are a few of the best private colleges in the country. These private colleges have their own entrance exams in most cases. While these colleges may seem expensive compared to the government colleges, they are also evaluated by the stringent metrics, which makes them really good investments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Which of the colleges made it to the top ranks in NIRF 2023?<\/span><\/h2>\n

NIRF 2023 is yet to be released – it will be released in July. As per NIRF 2022, the following colleges other than IITs and NITs feature in the top 25 colleges –<\/span><\/p>\n
